Chokwe Bondeko Throw Pillow

$145

HAND-EMBROIDERED WITH NEEDLE AND THREAD

Our Chokwe wool accent pillows are #blackhairlove personified. Bondeko means "brotherhood" the Bantu language of the artists who originally carved these delicate, decorative combs. Wondrous wool from New Zealand is dyed by hand using natural dyes. The entire front surface of the throw pillow is hand-embroidered using a 2,000 year old technique called the chain stitch. The back is off-white cotton canvas. Add character to your couch with a touch of texture.

NATURAL MATERIAL

ERI SILK

The art of embroidery has a very long tradition in India, with dozens of unique styles. Contrasting Chokwe combs are hand embroidered on crisp white linen using a chainstich. This style uses a series of looped stitches to create chain-like patterns. The detailed designs are exquisitely expressed by each artist. Her focused fingers stich stories across each pillow's sumptuous surface. Touchable tales, told in thread.

In our biased opinion, handmade yields unique and more soulful pieces. But that's not the only reason we're fanatical about this form of production. Industrialization entrenches inequality. Women and ethnic minorities have historically lacked the capital required to own, equip and operate textile factories. MADE x HANDS is committed to a more ethical value chain in which the economic benefits accrue to women and people of color. Whether spinning yarn, weaving, or embroidering pillows, each human step funds families and contributes to communities. Purchase with purpose.

NATURAL DYES

HAND-CRAFTED COLOR

Natural dyeing is an art. A timeless testament to human harmony with nature. Knowledge of the exact ingredients to create color, and the best mordants and methods to ensure color fastness only comes from extensive experience.

MADE x HANDS only produces handmade, naturally-dyed products with colors derived from plants, vegetables and minerals. Natural dyes ensure our pieces are non-toxic, non-allergenic and biodegradable. Natural dyes are infinitely better for the environment, coming from 100% natural and renewable sources. Unlike synthetic dyes, which taint textiles with harmful carcinogens. Aesthetically, natural dyes create subtle variations in color that can never be copied by chemicals. Our natural dyes are much harder and meaningfully more expensive to make. Worth it.
